Commission finds young people’s enterprise suffers from fear of failure
27 January 2015.
A commission that the Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership submitted evidence to and which had Katie Norman of Labrascals & Hull's Sheila Waudby Young Entrepreneur of Year 2014 as a commissioner has found that young people are discouraged from starting a business because it is perceived as risky was launched in London on Monday (26th January)
The Commission, set up by the National Youth Agency found that parents and teachers encourage young people to find a job with a regular income rather than support them to set up an enterprise. In fact, the report continues, young people can help allay fears by transitioning into managing a business. Starting off small, young people can develop their ideas via projects in their community or engaging in online trading alongside day jobs or study, the Commission heard.
With youth unemployment higher than for any other age group, self-employment should be considered a realistic option for many young people and more signposting and specialist support needs to be made available, the Commission concluded.
The Commission believes that youth workers, whose roles often demand these characteristics, are well placed to support young people’s enterprise skills, as well as act as mentors to inspire young people to consider enterprise as a career option. Commissioners are calling on youth workers to become stronger advocates for enterprise. There was also a correlation between entrepreneurial activity and community action – young people that establish a business are more likely to support volunteering and play an active role in their communities, the Commission found.
Chloe Smith MP, Chair of the Commission, said;
"This commission believes passionately in young people and their prospects. It can be an exciting, rewarding choice to set up your own business, and we want to see more young people do it.
The changing patterns of today’s economy mean that young people expect different things from their first job – and why does that job have to be working for someone else? Young people are ready to take risks, and the attitudes and skills that come with it are a solid foundation for life.
Yet young people need help to develop these entrepreneurial characteristics, such as tenacity, resilience, communication skills and risk taking - behaviours which contribute to success in running a business, the report continues."
Katie Norman of Labrascals who sits on the Commission said;
"Enterprise is not only about budgets and cash flow. Youth workers and are skilled in helping young people to believe in themselves and as well as technical
knowledge, running a business or being self employed demands self confidence and lots of it.
"I was very honoured to have represented Hull on this Commission and to outline how Hull City Council has a real commitment to supporting its enterprising young people via its support for the Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership, the Youth Enterprise Bank, Global Entrepreneurship Week, iDEA Award and the Lee Creamer Youth Enterprise Club. The Commission heard that for many young people, their interest in running a business was sparked by a desire to support an issue that they felt passionate about. Their business idea came later, that was certainly true in my case when I set up my science party business as I have a real passion for science."
Ross Bennett Chair Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership said;
"We have proudly supported over 350 young people with the support of Hull City Council to develop their own enterprising idea in the last 10 years through the youth enterprise bank alone. There has never been a more important time to help young people get access to the hands-on mentoring and support that already exists – but often not seen by them - so that they can get help to turn a brilliant idea into a sustainable business.
We have therefore been proud to be part of the Commission into Young People and Enterprise, helping it to find out what we are doing in Hull to support our enterprising young people and illustrating how it could be replicated in other parts of the country, it was also great that not only was Katie a member of the Commission it heard from two of our young entrepreneurs Thomas Arran a photographer and Loui Fowler of Triple R Banners about the support available to them."
National recognition for local youth enterprise champion
14th November
Every day entrepreneurs shape our business and personal lives in the UK; driving innovation, creating purpose and disrupting markets. The Fresh Business Thinking Power 100 represents those people who most impact on the lives of entrepreneurs; those who shape policy, create working environments, champion, mentor and promote entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship in UK plc.
Hull's Youth Enterprise Manager, Charles Cracknell, is listed at No 64 out of the top 100 influencers, movers and shakers in the world of entrepreneurship. It is a list of the most with power to impact on entrepreneurship. The list was drawn up by the Fresh Business Thinking editorial team and their trusted advisors from their conversations with their readers at events and through social media.
The ranking is based on multiple components; power and policy, promotion of the entrepreneurial cause, championing and mentoring, social influence and day to day engagement with the entrepreneurial community. For the most part they have not included more than one individual from any organisation, so the individual chosen probably best represents a blend of power, influence, promotion and engagement.
Ross Bennett Chair Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership said:-
"It is fitting that Charles should be listed in the Fresh Business Thinking Power Top 100 as he certainly has had an affect on local, national and international stage relating to youth entrepreneurship.
In the last 10 years he has established Youth Enterprise Bank, the Youth Enterprise Partnership, as well as establishing the young entrepreneurs and enterprising teacher's networks - he is also the driving force behind Global Entrepreneurship Week as well as championing the Duke of York's iDEA Award and establishing enterprise links in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mauritius."
Ruth Badger Patron of Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership said:-
"Charles commitment to supporting enterprising young people is infectious and he is relentless in his desire to support them, I often say that if each area in the UK had a Charles to galvanise a group to support young people with their enterprising ideas we would be a lot better off as a Country"
Charles has established a great team that the City should be proud of as they champion the city at regional, national and local level; he fully deserves to be listed in the Top 100 influencers alongside the likes of Lord Young Government Enterprise Adviser, Mathew Taylor Chief Executive RSA and Lord Digby Jones former Chief Executive CBI and Lord Sugar.”
Charles Cracknell Youth Enterprise Manager Hull City Council said:-
"I was shocked and very honoured at the same time to be listed in this list of 100 national influencers in the enterprise agenda

New Opportunities for enterprising young people
29th October
The Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership (HYEP) has launched its five year strategy and action plan to help support the city's enterprising young people.
‘From Ideas to Success' has been developed with the help of young people so that the programmes are tailored to suit their needs.
The aim of the strategy is to encourage more young people to become entrepreneurs and/or enterprising young people and to bring the whole city together to support them, through business and education. Hull already has a fantastic network of local businesses supporting young people through enterprise, and many successful young entrepreneurs.
This new action plan calls for an expansion of support already available, as well as using young entrepreneurs to act as role models and business advisers to their peers. It also identifies a need to increase the city's Youth Enterprise Bank to make more money available for young people to access and following on from HRH, The Duke of York, KG visit in October, to ensure at least 8, 000 young people aged 14 to 25 in Hull get involved in his iDEA award to contribute to enabling one million new young ideas to be supported across the UK, as well as establishing a new incubator service for young entrepreneurs in partnership with London Youth Support Trust.
Councillor Martin Mancey, portfolio holder said:
"Hull has a real and continued commitment to supporting its enterprising young people. The council welcomes
this new strategy and timetabled action plan, and will fully support the partnership to help young people develop their enterprising ideas either at school, in their community or indeed in their workplace.
"We recognise that whilst not every young person will become an entrepreneur but they can become enterprising employees and the whole city is totally committed to making sure this happens."
The HYEP is also involved in national and regional campaigns, working with University of Huddersfield and Rotherham Ready in championing the youth enterprise agenda in Yorkshire. Currently it is campaigning to make it easier for young entrepreneurs to benefit from public sector procurement opportunities as well as enabling young people in business aged under 16 to be recognised as entrepreneurs.
Ruth Badger Patron of Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership said:
“I am very proud to be associated with Hull; the rest of the UK needs to acknowledge the work of Hull City Council and its continuing commitment to youth enterprise through the Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership and related activities such as the Youth Enterprise Bank. This strategy represents a model of good practice for local authorities who aspire to be recognised as enterprising places."

Royal visit to look at Hull’s approach to youth entrepreneurship
28th September 2014
HRH The Duke of York, KG will be visiting Hull on Wednesday October 1 to encourage young people in the city to develop their enterprising ideas.
The Duke will hear more about the work of the Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership and its various groups, such as The John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank, ‘Be Enterprising Group’ of teachers, Hull’s young entrepreneurs group and the £5 Blossom programme.
His Royal Highness will have the opportunity to meet pupils from Malet Lambert School, Sirius Academy and Gillshill Primary School, who will be developing an App of Hull’s new Enterprise Trail board game. The young entrepreneurs have previously presented to both Lord Young as part of his review into enterprise education and to Buckingham Palace. The Duke will also meet some of Hull's young entrepreneurs who are supporting enterprising pupils in schools.
The Duke takes an active interest in supporting and promoting youth entrepreneurship and was keen to meet some of Hull's enterprising young people following their visit to Buckingham Palace in June. The group of young entrepreneurs presented him with a copy of the Enterprise Trail board game that illustrates the support available to enterprising young people in the city.
The Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership with its various sub groups was launched in 2003. Comprising a group of more than 200 passionate individuals they have come together with the objective of motivating, educating, inspiring and supporting the development of both existing and new enterprises. Their primary aim is to develop an enterprise culture amongst young people through the use of the Big 13 Enterprise Skills and to help those that want to develop their enterprising idea.
Speaking as co-founder of the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank, Maureen Foers OBE, said:
“We were delighted when The Duke expressed an interest in meeting us to find out more about what we are doing in this area.
“There has never been a more critical need for inspirational, positive and energetic teachers and entrepreneurs to work together to inspire young people to be more enterprising.
“We are very proud to have supported over 300 young people with grants and mentor support over the last 10 years.
Jane Disbery, Headteacher of Malet Lambert School, said:
"It will be an immense privilege to welcome His Royal Highness to Malet Lambert School.
“The school strongly supports the development of entrepreneurs, and believes that entrepreneurship is key to the development and growth of our region.
“We have nurtured a number of teen entrepreneurs such as the Green Queens, Loui Fowler and Harry Hopkins working with the wonderful people in the partnership who are always willing to support our pupils and other schools."
Ross Bennett of Engaging Education and Chair of Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership, said:
“We are delighted that His Royal Highness is taking the time and trouble to come and meet those involved in the Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership and the enterprising young people that we deliver activities and programmes to.
"We know The Duke is very knowledgeable about the youth enterprise agenda and has shown a particular interest in how young people get support across Yorkshire.
“We are pleased to receive support from other organisations, such as ‘Ready Unlimited’ from Rotherham, the University of Huddersfield who have an internationally recognised enterprise programme and the Nominet Trust, who he is working with on their joint iDEA programme to promote digital skills.”
Engaging Education leads the Campaign to Promote GEW
29th September 2014
In order to achieve another high profile campaign before and during Global Entrepreneurship Week, the Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership have appointed young entrepreneurs Engaging Education to lead on its campaign to promote the week because of its understanding of the aspirations of young people as well as its national reputation of being able to attract business support for young people’s projects and activities. Global Entrepreneurship Week is all about embracing innovation, imagination and creativity. It showcases enterprise, opening up new opportunities for young people across Hull, the UK and the world.
Councillor Martin Mancey said
“Now more than ever, we need fresh thinkers who spot opportunities, apply their talents and overcome obstacles to make their ideas happen, hence Hull gets fully behind this important week and engages with our young entrepreneurs.
I believe that if we are to engage young people in the enterprise agenda it is essential that we know what they think and that in order to raise finance for the weeks activities in Hull I am pleased to see that the organisers have developed a high profile campaign to attract support through Engaging Education."
Johnny Wootton Director of Engaging Education
"We are delighted to be appointed by the Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership to lead on their campaign to promote enterprise to the city’s young people during the week and in the run up to GEW 2014, and to lead on their campaign to attract high profile speakers and finance for the week whilst working with GH Events and Thomas Arran Photography.
We have already established a twitter account with over 1,000 followers and a new websitewww.gewhull.co.uk and have made contact with over 200 businesses in the City to seek their support.
Whether you're in education, business, the public sector or a charity, everyone should get involved in Global Entrepreneurship Week. It's about developing people's enterprise skills and helping them achieve their ambitions so I urge the City to get behind the Week of activities and if any one wishes to sponsor the week then please contact us now"
Hannah Crookes Vice Chair Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership

Lab Rascals shortlisted for national award
21st August 2014
A young entrepreneur from Hull has been shortlisted in the Lloyds Bank National Enterprise Awards 2014 for her hands-on scientific entertainment company, Lab Rascals www.labrascals.co.uk
Student Katie Norman set up the independent business in 2013 after conducting research into her idea of science parties for children aged between 5-14 at the University of Hull, and now successfully hosts a number of workshops across schools in Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire.
Katie had been shortlisted from hundreds of applications from the top student and graduate entrepreneurs in the country in order to compete for a share of £50,000 cash investment and two year mentoring programme.
Katie said: “I am really pleased to be shortlisted for the Lloyds national Enterprise Awards and am looking forward to the next stages in September and October, over the last year my business has grown from strength to strength and I have received support from many organisations involved in the youth enterprise agenda in Hull.
“I set up Lab Rascals in order to demonstrate that science can be fun and is about exploring the world around us by investigating and experimenting. I want to help inspire more children to take an active interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) by offering a range of hands-on interactive science parties, workshops and festival entertainment.”
During her Masters Degree in Chemistry at the University of Hull, Katie’s research highlighted the demand for science parties and the need for more STEM outreach and support for primary schools. Since conducting the research she began offering science parties and workshops, alongside training days for primary school teachers to help tackle any issues they may have when delivering science lessons in school and provided them with a support network of experts in the STEM fields.
Ruth Badger, Patron of Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership, said:
Since my appearance in the BBC Apprentice Series I have met a number of great young entrepreneurs in Hull and Katie follows in that tradition. During the last year I have watched her grow in stature and become a great young entrepreneur who fully deserves this recognition, and I and my fellow Patrons will be hoping that she wins the final prize to move her business on to the next level.
The Grand Final will take place in Edgbaston on Wednesday, October 15. An expert business panel including Tim Campbell, former Apprentice winner and founder of the Bright Ideas Trust – will judge the finalists.
Councillor Martin Mancey, Portfolio Holder at Hull City Council, said:
We would like to congratulate Katie on her success after receiving yet more national recognition for her fantastic entrepreneurial skills and innovative business idea, Lab Rascals.
After being shortlisted for the Great British Entrepreneurs Awards 2013 and winning the Shell LiveWIRE Award earlier this year, we now wish her the best of luck for the Lloyds Bank National Enterprise Awards 2014 and hope she can once again prove to the judges how passionate she is in order to take the next step towards building her empire.
“Katie is an exceptional young businesswoman who has brought science and fun together for adults and young people alike and she should be applauded for remarkable achievements so far which is not only great news for Lab Rascals, but for the city as well.”
Katie is a member of the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank panel and is the northern commissioner for the national youth agency commission into youth entrepreneurship. Where she assist new business start-ups and researches into how to help more youths set-up and succeed in business.
Katie has also invented a new green energy board game with a group of year 9 school children from Malet Lambert School and young entrepreneurs Engaging Education the aim of this project is to educate children about renewable energy sources, alongside how to conduct market research and product design. She is aiming to get this game on the market after the successful pilot study at the big bang fair2014.
Due to the positive feedback and the success of this product she is planning to run more science and enterprising projects in the future. Enterprising and STEM areas are becoming more vital for the economy growth of the city, therefore she hopes to inspire many children into these areas.
Outline of GEW 2014
28th July 2014

Message from Cllr Mary Glew - Lord Mayor of Kingston upon Hull
I am delighted to give my backing to Global Entrepreneurship Week 2014.
Now in its sixth year, Global Entrepreneurship Week brings together university students, school pupils, teachers, entrepreneurs, corporate leaders, employees, non-profit organisations and many others to celebrate and promote entrepreneurship across the globe. And this global movement is growing every year, with more and more countries and organisations involved. We want to make the next decade the most dynamic and entrepreneurial in Hulls history.
The work carried out by the Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership will help us achieve this, and is testament to the dedication across the City to support and encourage young people to get involved with enterprise and entrepreneurship.
I am particularly pleased that as part of Hull's Global Entrepreneurship Week Celebrations that at the start of November the City will see a special £5 Blossom celebration with schools and apprentices across the City developing ideas to make their business loans grow and which will see the profits shared between the schools and apprentices, the city's Be Enterprising Group and my own charities this year which are the Preston Road Women’s Centre, the Teenage Cancer Unit at Castle Hill hospital and Matthews Hub.

Hull's young entrepreneurs talk business – National Youth Agency Commission
1st July 2014
Young people have many of the characteristics to be great entrepreneurs but are much less likely to be self-employed than older workers.
That is the issue under examination by a new commission into young people and enterprise that Hull is getting involved in via its young entrepreneurs. The National Youth Agency has teamed up with A4e to establish the inquiry and an independent panel of commissioners, chaired by former Minister Chloe Smith MP with cross-party support.
It will look at barriers that hold back young people's success including fear of failure, finance and unemployment, and existing support mechanisms. The commissioners will also examine how we can encourage young people aged 16-24 years to develop key 'enterprise skills', such as resilience, tenacity and self-confidence, and how youth work can play a role in achieving this, as well as wider conclusions for skills, employment and value to society.
The commission is seeking insight and evidence from youth work and young people, businesses and employers from across public, voluntary, community organisations and enterprise. This will include evidence sessions held in Parliament, a national survey, case studies and local project visits with young people and business. The Commission will report by the end of the year.
Three of Hull's young entrepreneurs are involved in the commission.

"I look forward to hearing how things are going and I invite the National Youth Agency to hold one of their meetings in Hull so they can find out more about what we do in supporting our young entrepreneurs and our plans for the future."
Katie Norman, owner Labrascals www.labrascals.co.uk, said:
"I was very honoured to be invited to join the National Youth Agency commission looking into youth entrepreneurship, Hull has a great reputation for helping young entrepreneurs and my involvement illustrates this and I will be doing my up most to encourage my fellow commissioners to come and see what we are doing through Hull City Council, the Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership, the Badgers Sett Enterprise Challenge and the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank.
"Young people in Hull get practical and financial support with their enterprising idea and as a new business I know how important this is, the help I have had from my fellow young entrepreneurs, the Council and schools helping me with my ideas shows the value of partnership working and the just get on and do it attitude."
Commission Chair, Chloe Smith MP, said:
"Confidence and ambition are key characteristics for being a successful entrepreneur. Those are the same qualities we look for in young people to succeed in work and life, with skills gained that provide tangible benefits for the economy and active participation in a democratic society.
"The Commission will hear from young people, business leaders and youth workers on how we can support more young people to be enterprising and to consider starting their own businesses. We want to know where there are opportunities for closer links to be made with existing support networks."

Enterprise education to entrepreneurship visit to London
15th May 2014
Young entrepreneurs and enterprising pupils from Hull have been invited to Downing Street and to Buckingham Palace to outline how they are supported by Hull City Council and the Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership in developing enterprise activities and programmes such as the Youth Enterprise Bank, Be Enterprising Group of teachers, the Young Entrepreneurs Network, Global Entrepreneurship Week and the new Hull enterprise board game
Firstly, young entrepreneurs Katie Norman of Labrascals, Tom Arran Photographer, Ross Bennett of Engaging Education and the Chair of Hull’s Enterprising teachers group Stephen Logan of Malet Lambert School have been invited to update Buckingham Palace on what we are doing as a city to support our enterprising young people on 23rd May.
During Humber Business Week, representatives from Sirius Academy, Malet Lambert School, Gillshill Primary School and Hull’s Young entrepreneur of the Year Tom Arran have been invited to Downing Street on the 2nd of June to talk and present their views and recommendations to Lord Young for his review into enterprise education and present him with Hull’s Youth Enterprise Trail game, developed especially for the review by young people. The game features the Humber’s work including the ‘Be Enterprising Group’ of teachers and tutors and the ‘Big 13 Enterprise Skills. It also represents the fabulous support available in Hull for young people to develop their enterprising ideas and become successful entrepreneurs of the future…or indeed enterprising employees.
Ross Bennett Chair of Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership said:
“We welcome the opportunity to contribute to this important review led by the Governments Enterprise Champion Lord Young, with three of our enterprising schools in Hull following the development of a board game that highlights what is working in Hull to support our enterprising young people.
“We are equally excited that we are going to Buckingham Palace to outline the support that is available to young entrepreneurs in Hull and to see if we can work with the Duke of York on his new Inspiring Digital Enterprise Award (iDEA) scheme run by the Nominet Trust to support young people aged 16 to 25 to gain the critical digital and entrepreneurial skills they need to set up and run their own business venture. We are hoping that the Duke of York will come to Hull soon to see the work of those that support our enterprising young people,
Cllr Rosie Nicola said:
“It is great news that within a two week period, some of Hull’s enterprising students and young entrepreneurs are to inform both Buckingham Palace and No10 Downing Street about the work that goes on in our City to support our enterprising young people, it clearly shows that Hull is seen as an enterprising place and is wanting to do more to develop the City’s entrepreneurial culture amongst its young people”
New report calls for better integration of entrepreneur skills at all levels of education
4th March 2014
Hull City Council and the Youth Enterprise Partnership have influenced the All-Party Group for Micro Businesses who have launched their fifth report since being established in 2010.
Entitled ‘An education system fit for an entrepreneur’, the report recognises the key role entrepreneurs play in the drive for growth, and looks at the effectiveness of the education system in supporting young entrepreneurs.
The report investigated, for the first time, best practice from primary schools that included the work of the £5 Blossom programme through to retirement with examples chosen from around the world and the UK. The report includes an examination of the cognitive psychology behind the entrepreneurial mindset, real case studies and up-to-date survey data.
Although the concept of enterprise education has been discussed since 1987, this is the first UK report which looks at the need for an overarching strategy across all government departments to deliver the support needed for entrepreneurs to flourish.
Ross Bennett, Chair Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership said:
“We were delighted to be involved in this report as it illustrates what we have achieved as a partnership over the last 10 years in particular through our primary enterprise programme, our well respected activities during Global Entrepreneurship Week, the city’s Youth Enterprise Bank and our Youth Enterprise Summit.
“More small businesses, creating more jobs are a vital part of a long-term plan for Hull and Britain’s future and young people are integral to that.”
Anne Marie Morris MP said:
“Enterprise education is crucially important if the growth agenda is to succeed. We need to create enquiring minds open to new ideas and able to spot opportunities. We also need to ensure education in entrepreneurship is available to all, not just those that make it to business school.
“Entrepreneurs emerge across the age range. I met a young lad of nine recently who had just set up his own business. As he put it “my teachers don’t get it”. Clearly many teachers do get it as our research shows but that support is not universally there – and it should not just be a matter of luck!
“I know the government is listening. But what we now need is to make real progress and set out concrete steps which I hope proposals from our report will provide the building blocks for.”
Professor Andy Penaluna, an author of the report said:
“What impressed us most were the education champions we met in Hull and the work of the city’s ‘Be enterprising’ group of teachers and tutors supported by Hull City Council which is linked to the aspirational City Plan.
“There is a clear energy amongst the educators that we met to engage with this important agenda, and they have evidenced the many creative ways that they have got things done – usually driven by the needs of their pupils and students via the use of ‘Big 13 Enterprise Skills’.
“The other remarkable thing was how many of the entrepreneurs echoed similar thoughts to those of the teachers, researchers and lecturers that we listened to over the past 14 months. Consequently a clear way forward has emerged.
“Now the debate can be less about what we need to do, but more directly concerned with ways in which we can implement these findings and to provide meaningful education that matches the needs of an innovative and entrepreneurial society.”
Entrepreneurs are a real strength of our British economy and the micro businesses they create are key drivers of growth.
Over the last three years, there have been 400,000 new businesses created and business start ups have become increasingly popular.
Small businesses add 48% to private sector turnover and comprise more than 99% by number of UK businesses.
There is a growing recognition that setting up your own business is a real opportunity and option for people.
Top ten recommendations to support Enterprise Education:
-
An overarching strategy by government looking at enterprise education from primary school to retirement needs to be established, based on clear opportunities at all levels of education and for work returners.
-
Clarity needs to be established as to what we mean by enterprise education and entrepreneurship education, both of which are crucially important but different.
-
Teacher training should be reviewed to give teachers a better basis for engaging with the business community for the benefit of students.
-
OFSTED assessments need to assess business engagement not just community engagement.
-
The Higher Education sector needs to provide a module on entrepreneurship. This should be made available to all students regardless of discipline and enterprise education needs, over time, to be integrated into all mainstream courses. UUK, HEFCE and associated bodies need to step forward and practically develop this.
-
A working group needs to be established across academe and business to put forward proposals for integrating work experience, education, mentoring and funding; the four strands which combine to deliver the best results when combined.
-
A working group also needs to be established to look quite separately at work returners and what support should be available to enable them to set up in business later on in life.
-
The business community should be incentivised and encouraged to be more actively involved in enterprise and entrepreneurship education through tax reliefs allowing time and expenses engaging in enterprise education to be set off against tax.
-
The Local Enterprise Partnerships should be required to have at least t wo board members from the SME community and at least one of these should be a micro business.
-
Government funding support to LEPS through the Regional Growth Fund and other government support schemes should require evidence before award of LEP engagement with enterprise education

The City Plan and Enterprising Teachers
12th November 2013
Hull faces some big issues and challenges – but now has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to regain its status as a dynamic and thriving European port-city.
The developing City Plan is about tackling these issues and seizing this opportunity. It’s about bringing the whole of Hull together to set out -
-
a clear goal and ambitions for the city over the next 10 years
-
what needs to happen, when it will be delivered and who’s involved
-
how the lives and opportunities of local people will be improved as the plan is delivered
-
what it will mean for the city as a whole and wider region
Therefore it has set up a group for education practitioners across Hull who want to ‘Be Enterprising’, to come together and share their fantastic ideas – inspiring our future generations and helping to embed the Big 13 Enterprise skills into all our young people’s lives and is supported by the Regeneration and Partnerships Team of Hull City Council. It is Chaired by Stephen Logan Assistant Headteacher of Malet Lambert School.
A key focus of this group is the promotion of The Big 13 - 13 enterprise entitlements devised to cover the spectrum of entrepreneurial skills through the curriculum that were developed with partners in Rotherham. The Big 13 are a range of enterprise skills and capabilities that are utilised during, and the outcome of, good quality enterprise learning. They were devised through the award winning enterprise education programme, Rotherham Ready, which now operates nationally as a not-for-profit social enterprise Ready Unlimited. A key part of the Ready Unlimited approach is to make learning about and applying enterprise capabilities part of children’s enterprise learning entitlement.

Global Entrepreneurship Week 2013
14th November 2013
Hull City Council in partnership with Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership has organised a series of events, which will take place from 18 – 22 November 2013 to inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs. Hull is putting its weight behind Global Entrepreneurship week a campaign run by the Kauffman Foundation and Youth Business International in order to show how enterprising its young people are. Every day in the UK people talk about making a change in their life and consider starting up a business. By connecting individuals to practical support and those who have done it already, Global Entrepreneurship Week 2013 will help turn these exchanges into the businesses of tomorrow. Global Entrepreneurship Week is the world's largest celebration of innovation and enterprise, active in 150 countries across the world. Global Entrepreneurship Week inspires people everywhere through local, national and global activities designed to help them explore their potential as self-starters and innovators.
Although Global Entrepreneurship Week 2013 has a grand sounding name, the reality of the week is that it's all about the small things, and as the small acorn develops into a mighty oak, so it hopes that the ideas and activities put on during the week for many young people in Hull will one day take root and go on to become something much bigger.
The week in Hull is sponsored by a number of small and large private, public and charitable organisations including Malet Lambert School, St. Stephens, Spencer Group, Hull Training, KC, Mail News & Media, The Co-operative, Sangwin Group, Cityworks UK, Jelf Insurance Partnership, Hull College and British Land and the week as a whole by Hull City Council.
Blair Jacobs Chair Hull Youth enterprise partnership, said:
"Global Entrepreneurship Week in Hull is always a huge success, and this year sees the tenth year has attracted over 50 organisations to support our enterprising young people.
"We believe that not everyone will become an entrepreneur, but everyone needs to be enterprising and you should start at a very young age, so this year there are two events dedicated to Hull's primary school pupils."
Chief Executive of Youth Business International, Andrew Devenport said:
"There is a great need to provide opportunities today that help entrepreneurs pursue their dreams and build the businesses of tomorrow. Global Entrepreneurship Week 2013 is kick starting the conversations that are needed to make this happen. We are pleased that as a City Hull gives its full support to the campaign to enable its young people to celebrate"
“We hope this sets an aspirational agenda for today's young people in Hull and the Humber sub-region to set up their own businesses, start social enterprises to improve their communities and be innovative employees themselves."

Claire Young Patron Youth Enterprise Partnership
There is no doubt that Hull as a city has real commitment through the Youth Enterprise Partnership to develop the enterprising skills of young people, it never ceases to amaze me how with the right support and encouragement young people are truly enterprising and whilst not all will go on to be entrepreneurs of the future they certainly will be more enterprising in their outlook and in the workplace, I know it will be a difficult choice but all nominations are winners and true ambassadors of Hull and Humberside.
Make £5 Blossom Celebration Event 18th July 2013
23rd July 2013
The Guildhall was the venue for the ninth celebration event for the latest round of Make £5 Blossom with a fantastic turnout from both schools and businesses.
Gillshill Primary kicked off proceedings with the children presenting about their Film Night that they had organised at school. The children described the job roles they all had and how they had sold it as a package of film, drink and hotdog for the customers and ended up with a tidy profit of £185.
Newland St Johns followed with their story of the summer fair and the custom made gingerbread men with each one decorated to represent a Hull FC player which was very apt as their business partner was Hull FC. They even managed to sell 40 more of these to two young Malet Lambert entrepreneurs who were helping on the day.
Stoneferry Primary managed to get 14 of their pupils to the event and their presentation covered a multitude of products and services that they had been involved in, it was a case of what they didn’t do!! The list included a movie night, lanyards, key rings, pencil pots, pizza nights, bouncy balls and the making of some very professional looking cup cakes & buns. They explained how they visited their business partner, Julie Worman, at Spencer’s head office and even managed to sell some of their products there. They also ended up with a staggering profit of over £600! They also managed to squeeze another £20 out of Loui & Ellie from Malet Lambert for some of the samples they had brought to share on the day.
St Richards’s pupils gave a great account of their ideas & products and explained how they had made wire sculptures, wooden plaques, garden pebbles, glass lanterns, fairy doors and garden ornaments. All these were sold at a planned after school sale and they had advertised this with posters, letters and even sent text messages to all parents, another fantastic profit of £350!!
Foredyke Primary was another school taking part in the project for the first time and they explained how the big 13kills were important for their ideas. The children were pleased with the games night that was held once week, the film nights held were very popular and one night alone made £90 profit alone. They described how they would have advertised the Parents Café better if they were to do it again as this took quite a few nights to get going. They are now planning on spending the profit they made on some new resources for their Golden Time at school.
Movie Nights seemed to be a popular theme in this round and Collingwood’s year 4 children did a great job of describing how they had planned their event that included job roles for the pupils, informing the parents and pupils of the night, market research on choice of film and most importantly what flavour crisps to sell! Marvellous Movies was a sell out and they made a tidy £45.60 profit.
Parkstone Primary produced a slick presentation on how they had turned their loan to profit with a café that they had organised for the school, the children described the challenges they had and the problems they had to overcome to make it work and it was plain to see that they had used an abundance of enterprise skills for their project.
The final school to present was Paisley and they had been linked with RMC Digital, the children explained that they had also done a Movie Night over two days but for the whole school. After researching film choices, food and drink preferences the team spent £130 on DVDs, popcorn, drinks and sweets and ended up with a healthy £230 profit. The children were planning on working closely with RMC to help with a new enterprise project making and selling badges and magnets.
The morning was wrapped up with each of the businesses receiving a small award from the pupils as a thank you for getting involved with the project, all the pupils & schools seemed to have had a great time and all ended up in profit too!

Enterprise recognition for Hull Youth Enterprise and Hull Training from Warwick Un
iversity
Hull City Councils Youth Enterprise department have been an associate of Warwick Universities CEI for a number of years and expressed the wish some time ago to be assessed as an enterprising and innovative organisation, alongside a CEI award program which is currently being carried out for apprenticeships and primary and secondary schools as part of the City enterprise education agenda. After the visit from two assessors from Warwick University, Youth Enterprise were able to demonstrate the enterprise competence of a local authority department, showing that the public sector can be as enterprising as business. The recommendation of the assessor is that Youth Enterprise section of Regeneration and Partnerships at Hull City Council will now receive the CEI award for Organisational Innovation and Business Enterprise, therefore the only local authority in the country to get it and that Hull Training will get the Organisational Innovation and Business Enterprise for its Signmaking Apprenticeship Programme.
Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership Patron, Ruth Badger said
“I am delighted that the Department for Youth Enterprise within Regeneration and Partnerships and Hull Training at Hull City Council have been awarded these prestigious awards. Out of all the City’s in the UK this proves how hard Hull works to improve the lives of the young people who live there. The dedication and passion the enterprise and apprenticeship partnerships have in developing young entrepreneurs and apprentices is not only to be admired but to be used as an example of how it should be done. Well done to all involved.”
Councillor Bayes, Portfolio Holder for Economic Regeneration & Employment said
“Congratulations to the Youth Enterprise and Hull Training teams on this achievement; it really shows that being enterprising in the workplace is happening and this CEI Award acknowledges the fact. The City needs our young people to be enterprising either as apprentices or as entreprenurs, more so in the current climate than ever before, so the Youth Enterprise and apprenticeship support we have in place is crucial and it is important that they practice what they preach”
Craig Grewcock, Warwick University said
"The Department of Youth Enterprise in Hull City Council has been working with the Centre for Education and Industry at the University of Warwick for a number of years, successfully developing and encouraging enterprise education within city primary schools. In recent months it has further supported the University by piloting a new series of awards. Hull Training as part of Hull City Council has now successfully gained the CEI award for Organisational Innovation and Business Enterprise in Apprenticeship Training for its well-regarded Signmaking apprenticeship programme. Additionally, the Department of Youth Enterprise has itself gained a second and overarching award for Organisational Innovation and Business Enterprise. The process has involved detailed analysis of the organisations with the provision of supporting evidence, associated case studies and an action plan for future development.
The University is currently talking to the government Department for Business Innovation and Skills who have expressed a particular interest in this new process and will be illustrating the process using the work which has been done with Hull. It is also hoped that the innovation and enterprise awards will be extended to other apprenticeship programs within the City Youth Enterprise Department

Young People Get a New Way to Talk Business
17th December 2012
From early next year, young entrepreneurs under 24 in Hull will have a place to talk to peers about business and enterprise with the new entrepreneurs network “Let’s Talk Business”.
The network is designed to be a collaboration of young people who face similar struggles. Let’s Talk Business aims to help young people in business by sharing anecdotes of problems they faced and solutions they found to them.
Let’s Talk Business will be operated on a private online forum where young entrepreneurs can post their own questions, news and anecdotes and receive feedback from the community. Partner businesses, established businesses run by young people up to the age of 30, will also be on hand to answer industry specific questions.
The network will be an extension of the offer of the Lee Creamer Enterprise Club, which already provides young people with business advice, a hot-desking facility provided by Hull City Council and funding through the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank.
Let’s Talk Business members will also get special discounts from supporters, sponsors and members to help them make their business’ start-up cheaper as well as helping those businesses make their first sales.
Thomas Arran, owner of T Arran Photo and Let’s Talk Business member says;
"As a photographer, networking is essential for both producing business and creating new ideas.
“Being involved from the start, Let’s Talk Business is shaping up to be a fantastic opportunity to meet and communicate with other young entrepreneurs, provide support to each other as well as gain essential mentoring from already established young entrepreneurs."
As a network for entrepreneurs, by entrepreneurs, every member is looking to raise the profile of the outstanding work and the passion shared by so many young people in the city.
Oliver Wilson, 18, MD of Xuro Ltd. and Co-Chair of Let’s Talk Business says;
“I wanted to start my first business at 13 and felt stupid for thinking it could be possible. It wasn’t until my voice was heard by Hull City Council’s Youth Enterprise Service that I realised that there were so many other people like me already trying to make their dreams happen.
“In my eyes, the two aims of Let’s Talk Business are to show young people the sheer number of success stories in the city and to help those interested in business become one themselves by giving them the skills, stories and contacts to push them along the way.”
Let’s Talk Business has received backing from a number of entrepreneurs, including local entrepreneur Phil Benson and former BBC Apprentice star and international businesswoman Ruth Badger.
Phil Benson, co-founder of Xing Smoothies and Xing Health and Let’s Talk Business patron says;
“The support I received when I started my business in 2008 was great but there was no one to talk to my age that had recently had experiences like mine.
“It’s fantastic to see entrepreneurial spirit in Hull still going strong and supported by Hull City Council and it is important that we nurture that as best we can. It’s hard for ideas to grow if you “go it alone” which is why having people around you is the most important part in starting a business.”
Along side great work already done in the city with events such as Global Entrepreneurship Week, the hope is that more young people will come forward as entrepreneurs as a result of the increased level of support available.
More information about Let’s Talk Business will be available early 2013 on the Let’s Talk Business website www.letstalkbusinesshull.co.uk and on Twitter @ltbhull and Facebook (www.facebook.com/ltbhull). In the meantime, for more information, call Oliver Wilson on 01482 778834 or email letstalk@letstalkbusinesshull.co.uk.

Youth Enterprise Charter
8th December 2012
With a startling number of young people in Hull and East Riding out of work, the provision of high quality enterprise support and learning for young people has never been so important. Support from the business community will allow greater opportunity for successful transition from education into employment.
This support can be given in all manner of ways and the Youth Enterprise Charter aims to bring this all under one banner and to recognise and share best practice in a way that benefits young people in helping them to develop their enterprising idea and how businesses and organisations can help them.
Since the Youth Enterprise Charter was launched in September 2012 by former BBC Apprentice star Ruth Badger and featured during Global Entrepreneurship Week we have seen 80 local and national organisations support the aims of the Charter. Many of these organisations already have a commitment to supporting Hull’s youth enterprise agenda such as the University of Hull, Cityworks, Hull Training, Hull City Council, Force-7, British Land, Hull & Humber Chamber of Commerce, KC, the Co-operative, St Stephens, Claughtons, Goldings and Xing to name but a few
Ruth Badger Patron of Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership said
“Hull is one of the most enterprising cities in the country and that’s why I am backing the Youth Enterprise Charter and this is clearly shown by the support the 80 organisations are willing to give to the City’s enterprising young people, though this is a great start we need many more in order to make a real impact and further develop the city’s entrepreneurial culture, so I would urge all the business leaders to find out more and support your future business generation ”
Blair Jacobs Chair of Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership said
“ It is very pleasing that so many organisations have already agreed to support the city’s youth enterprise charter, there is no doubt in my mind as the city commits itself to becoming a more enterprising place to do business and the embedding of the Big 13 Enterprise skills within our schools and colleges after yet another highly successful Global Entrepreneurship Week than more and more young people are going to need support in developing their enterprising ideas”
If you would like more information, or to sign up to the Youth Enterprise Charter, please visit www.youthenterprise-hull.co.uk or contact Oliver Wilson or Mike Notarantonio on 01482 612983.
Hull gains High Impact status from YBI
28th November 2012
361 organisations that ran activities as part of Global Entrepreneurship Week in 2012 have met the High Impact criteria set by The Princes Youth Business International, the organisers of the week, and the Hull City Council supported
Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership and its Making Changes for Careers programme was one of them. In order for the partnership to gain this nationally recognised award, it had to meet four out of six of the High Impact Criteria including:
1. Promote the Global Entrepreneurship Week campaign
2. Provide practical support
3. Provide role models
4. Share our success
5. Develop enterprise capabilities
6. Measure the effect we had on the young people
The Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership organised 19 events in November for Hull’s enterprising young people in the run up to and during Global Entrepreneurship Week 2012.
Blair Jacobs, Chair of the Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership, said;
“The partnership is honoured to be one of only 361 organisations to have gained thisprestigious High Impact award for our series of activities during Global Entrepreneurship Week 2012. The week is a true partnership effort and is only made possible by our many sponsors and supporters but most important of all the young people of Hull who constantly demonstrate how enterprising they are. This year saw the launch of the Start up Loans Humber programme which will complement the support given to young entrepreneurs by the KC supported John
Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank.
“We hope the young people that took part enjoyed GEW this year. We look forward to partnering with them along with our sponsors, old and new, next year to continue to deliver and promote Hull’s excellent enterprise activities and events! Next year GEW 2013 takes place between the 18 - 24 November.”
Oliver Wilson, Owner of Xuro Computers, said;
“I’ve always looked at Global Entrepreneurship Week as a key part of any school year as it helps students to learn new skills that they often do not have time to practice in the classroom. When I was at college, GEW gave me the inspiration to start the business I’m still running today by having entrepreneurs give their real life experiences to students first-hand. So many young people in Hull have fantastic enterprising attitudes that will really take them far in the real world. I look forward to Xuro being involved in GEW 2013, our third year supporting the week of events!”
Andrew Devenport, Chief Executive Officer of The Prince's Youth Business International (YBI), said;
“I would personally like to acknowledge the staff in Hull for again delivering a fantastically vibrant and engaging series of events during Global Entrepreneurship Week in 2012. I was honoured to personally have the opportunity of participating in the Making Changes for Careers Post-16 Enterprise Masterclass and I was very impressed by the confidence, innovative ideas and engagement shown by the students. I can absolutely appreciate why the Hull campaign is regarded as a national leader. I look forward to working with HYEP and the entrepreneurial community in Hull for many years to come.”

Chair of Enterprise Education Practioners Group
In order to ensure that Hull meets the challenges set in its Youth Enterprise Charter, Hull's most enterprising teacher 2011 Stephen Logan Business Champion at Malet Lambert School has accepted the role as Chair of the enterprise education practitioners group which will act as a sub group of the Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership.
The aim of the group is to support teachers and tutors across all curriculum phases and to ensure that young people have the support to develop their enterprising ideas in schools and colleges in the City. The group also aims to establish and train an enterprise champion in every school, college, training provider and organisation that works with young people as well as to highlight enterprise as a progression pathway for young people by enabling them to be aware of opportunities across Europe
Claire Young Patron Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership stated
"I am pleased that Stephen has taken on the role of Chair of Hull's new enterprise education practitionersgroup, he is a great advocate of Hull's enterprising young people and will help to ensure that teachers and tutors across all age ranges continue to embed enterprise within their day to day teaching.
Hull has a national and international reputation for its work in supporting its enterprising young people which culminates each year in one of the country's most successful series of events during Global Entrepreneurship Week. Hull's commitment was recently further emphasised by the setting up of Hull studio School which will enable young people to develop their business idea at aged 16 whilst still studying.
Stephen Logan chair enterprise education practitioners group stated
"Hull has achieved a great deal in developing the enterprise agenda in its schools and colleges through the Big 13 Enterprise Skills and the fact that 20 of them now have achieved the Warwick national standard in enterprise education, it is now time I believe that we raise the game and seek to establish our own branded curriculum materials as well as enabling young people to find out what is available to them in the world of enterprise both in this country and across Europe"
Global Entrepreneurship Week Fundraiser
Hull Students from Andrew Marvell College, Malet Lambert School and Victoria Dock Primary school came together on Saturday 6th October to bag pack at ASDA, Mount Pleasant. The students helped to raise just under £610 in just four hours. The week of events costs a considerable amount of money and that is why the students who benefit so greatly from the event wanted to help and show how much they value the week by helping to raise the money.
Ruth Badger former BBC Apprentice and International Business Guru supports the whole week of activities and said;
“When I was informed about how much the young people from Andrew Marvell College, Malet Lambert School and Victoria Dock Primary school had raised for Global Entrepreneurship Week 2012 – I was not surprised as Hull has a wealth of talent in terms of its enterprising young
people and it clearly shows why the work the City and the schools are doing in developing an enterprisingculture is working”
Blair Jacobs Chair of Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership said:
“Not only is it great to see schools getting involved in enterprise education, it’s also fantastic to see those schools that go out of their way to support Hull’s enterprising young people by raising funds themselves which will enable other young people to benefit from Global Entrepreneurship Week 2012"
“As we tweeted the pictures from the event a number were re-tweeted by celebrities such as Ruth Badger, Claire Young, Lord Sugar, Karl Turner MP, as well as many other organisations throughout out the UK and the World such as GEWUK, Tory Business, Start Up Britain and the international organisers of Global Entrepreneurship Week so there is no doubt we have got the message out how enterprising the young people of Hull are.”

Hair Raising Business
A nineteen year old entrepreneur has launched a business that will provide specialist support to those suffering hair loss as a result of cancer treatment or conditions such as alopecia. Amy Taylor from Keyingham first came up with the idea for her business, Hair by Amy, 6 months ago. Amy is a fully qualified hairdresser and has been working in salons for four years and in that time has supported a number of cancer patients. She saw a gap in the market for business offering bespoke services to those in need of wigs.
Amy’s business will provide a range of services including sourcing and styling of wigs, supporting her customers when their hair grows back and providing general hairdressing services. Amy’s business has secured funding from the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank. The bank offers practical support and grants of up to £1,000 for 13 to 21-year-olds who need finance to set up or develop their businesses.
Amy said:
“I’ve seen family and friends go through cancer treatment and lose their hair. By speaking to them and by doing my own research I’ve found that for a lot of people who are losing their hair, going to a normal salon isn’t a great experience for them. Those that do offer private consultations are really expensive. I want to put my customers at ease and make them feel comfortable and where better to do that than in their own home.
“With the grant from the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank I am now able to fulfil my dreams and set up my business. The support they continue to give me has been fantastic and I would recommend that other young people who have a business idea to speak to them.”
The bank is funded through a range of donations from entrepreneurs, together with the City Council’s Hull Training. It is also closely linked to the Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership, which aims to encourage young people to become more enterprising and contribute to Hull City Council's target of creating 1,200 new businesses. The bank's funding last year received a funding boost from KC, which has donated £60,000 to the bank over three years.
KC Commercial and Finance Director Sean Royce said:
“Amy is exactly the reason why we supported the Youth Enterprise Bank. She is a determined and thoughtful young lady that has not only developed a great business plan, but she is giving a fantastic service to a group of people in our community when they need it most. I wish Amy the best of luck with her business.”
As well as financial support, Amy successfully undertook the International Association of Bookkeepers Level 1 Award in Computerised Accounting for Business QCF offered by Golding Computer Services Ltd.
Di Garbera, Golding’s General Manager said: “We’re delighted to support the Youth Enterprise Bank by providing training to local young entrepreneurs. Accounting knowledge is a must for all businesses and young start-ups are no exception, Amy was a real star absorbing as much as she could and is a great role model for future young entrepreneurs.”

The winning team will receive a special prize in vouchers courtesy of the Co-operative on of the major sponsors of the week.
Whilst I may not be from Hull, I feel at home in a City that does so much to support its enterprising young people through the Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership. I am an ardent supporter of its work in particular during Global Entrepreneurship Week, which aims to create a more enterprising culture amongst young people. My hope is that today's young people go on to aspire to set up their own businesses, start social enterprises to improve their communities and be innovative employees themselves. Your area is doing a great deal to support their enterprising young person which makes me proud to be the Patron of the City’s Youth Enterprise Bank. Deadline extended to Challenge the Badgers Sett Enterprise Challenge
The deadline for entries for the Badgers Sett Enterprise Challenge is to be extended by a month to 1st November 2012
Young people from Hull and East Riding have now until 1 November to enter their enterprising idea, which can be based on anything from a new business venture to a community project. There are three age categories for youngsters to enter for primary schools entries who can win up to £500, secondary school entries who can win up to £750 and a section for 16-24 year olds who can win up to £1,500.
Young people from Hull and the East Riding are being encouraged to take part in an enterprise competition to stand a chance of winning a share of up to £5,000 to put towards their enterprising idea. Challenge the Badgers Sett is a Dragon's Den style competition which was launched on 1st June this year. The competition is being run in partnership by Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership, the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank alongside Force-7, Ruth Badger consultancy and GH Events.
Independent panels will asses the applications and then draw up a shortlist for each category who will then come face-to-face with the 'Badgers', including Ruth Badger herself. The short listed young people will pitch their idea to the 'Badgers' during Global Entrepreneurship Week 2012 in November and get the chance to double their initial winnings with the overall winner getting business advice from Ruth Badger herself.
Ruth Badger said:
“I am very passionate about enterprise and ensuring young people have the opportunity to engage in it! Out of all of the City’s UK wide, Hull are the best at engaging real entrepreneurs, successful business and partnering them with the young people of the city and that is why I have set up this competition with the Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership and the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank. I am pleased that demand in its third year is so great that we have had to extend the deadline by one month.”
"I want to encourage young people in Hull and the East Riding , an area that I have adopted for its commitment to its enterprising young people, who possibly are not at the stage where they feel can develop their idea on their own or need some extra confidence.
Blair Jacobs Chair Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership , added:
“Demand for support from potential entrants to this exciting competition has meant we have extended the deadline date by one month as there are some great ideas with just a little extra support could prove to be award winning enterprising ideas in the future
"The sort of things we as judges will be looking at is how entrants are going to best use the prize money. Perhaps they are going to employ someone or they are going to put something back into their local community working with other young people or in terms of the entries from primary and secondary schools in Hull and the East Riding the funding will develop such things as smoothie bars, gardens and cafes as well as play areas all of which make an invaluable contribution to a schools community.”
Future Proof – Young Entrepreneurs of the Future
4th July 2012
The Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership, with former BBC Apprentice Star and international Business Guru Ruth Badger one of its Patrons are consulting on a Youth Enterprise Charter for Hull in order to cultivate an entrepreneurial culture amongst the city’s next generation of business people.
The vision of the partnership is to work with young people aged from 4 – 24 to secure a positive and sustainable future for the City through developing an entrepreneurial culture, via a spectrum of enterprise opportunities to allow all young people to engage with enterprise. Our vision is shared with our partners in local business and successful entrepreneurs
The Hull Youth Enterprise partnerships, through the Charter, are aiming to:-
• Establish and train an Enterprise Champion in every school, college, training provider and organisation that works with young people
• To produce more young entrepreneurs and business start-ups
• To enable more young people to access funding such as the youth enterprise bank and the youth enterprise loan scheme
• To highlight enterprise as a progression pathway
• Provide the opportunity for young people to undertake the opportunity of running businesses within or outside an educational setting
Ruth Badger Patron Hull Youth Enterprise partnership said
“I am very passionate about enterprise and ensuring young people have the opportunity to engage in it! Out of all of the City’s UK wide, Hull are the best at engaging real entrepreneurs, successful business and partnering them with the young people of the city. I believe if I had have been brought up in Hull and had the privilege to experience what they do I would have made my millions a lot earlier.
“With the current economic state it is crucial we get our businesses to engage with young people to make them excited about the working world and help them build a successful future, that is why I am pleased to support Hull's draft Youth Enterprise Charter and I would ask you to contribute to its ongoing development!”
Blair Jacobs Chair Hull Youth Enterprise partnership said
The draft Youth Enterprise Charter formalises a set of principals designed to bridge the gap between education and business. They both allow young people, teachers/tutors and businesses to work together in partnership. This engagement helps to develop young people’s knowledge and understanding of enterprise so they can become either enterprising employees or future entrepreneurs.
The proposed draft Charter agrees the ways in which businesses can work together with students, teachers/tutors. It creates a common understanding of the skills, language and expectations of Hull’s young people as they become more enterprising.

National StartUp Loans Scheme
8th June 2012
Budding Hull entrepreneurs are being urged to make the most of a new fund aimed at helping them set up their own business.
The new national StartUp Loans scheme was launched recently and Hull business leaders and members of the Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership are keen to see local young people take full advantage.
The scheme will offer finance and support to entrepreneurs, aged 18-24, in a bid to kick-start more businesses and tackle youth unemployment. Applicants will receive advice and guidance, with the most promising going on to receive formal
mentoring and training, including help with developing a business plan. Those with “robust and approved” plans will then be eligible for loans of around £2,500.
In Hull and the East Riding it will complement the work of the city’s Youth Enterprise Bank that is backed by KC that gives grants of up to £1,000 to young people aged 21 and under that live in Hull and the East Riding, which since 203 has supported over 200 young people,
Blair Jacobs, Chair of the Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership, said:
“The support and advice available through this scheme could help local young entrepreneurs turn an idea and a proposal into a real business. We would urge young people to find out more and look to secure valuable funds working alongside the city’s Youth Enterprise Bank that could help get their business off the ground.”
Councillor Steven Bayes Portfolio Holder, Portfolio Holder, Economic Regeneration and Employment said:
"We would certainly encourage young people from across the Humber looking to set up their own business to explore how this scheme could help them. As with other initiatives such as the Youth Enterprise Bank , which is also available to young people in Hull and the East Riding young people can pick up support in a variety of ways including help in putting together a business plan right through to receiving a loan to set up the business."
The maximum repayment terms on offer with the loans will be five years, while the interest rate will be set at the Retail Price Index (RPI) plus 3%. All repayments and interest will be channelled back into a central pot to support other young entrepreneurs.

More Hull Primary Schools achieve National Standard for Enterprise Education
11th May 2012
Priory Primary and Paisley Primary schools have successfully been assessed by Warwick University on their fantastic enterprise activity within the schools; they have now become the latest Hull Primary’s to achieve the National Standard for Enterprise Education. The award of the National Standard recognises the schools commitment to embedding enterprise into their curriculum and celebrates the various activities and enterprise challenges that pupils are involved in.
With these two schools achieving the award it takes it up to 14 primary schools and Malet Lambert school achieving it in Hull.
Craig Grewcock, The University of Warwick assessor, said
“Paisley Primary had a strong submission including several sections of the audit likely to serve as future exemplars for other schools as to completion of good practice; there was also a well planned and managed range of enterprise activities in the school. Priory Primary have a committed head teacher supported by a knowledgeable, experienced and enthusiastic enterprise coordinator, the level of enthusiasm for enterprise activity demonstrated by pupils during the assessment indicated the fantastic impact it was having on their learning”
Paisley teacher & enterprise champion Allison Stabler said,
"Paisley are very proud to receive the National Standard for Enterprise Education award as it recognises the children's effort and hard work. Being involved in projects such as the regeneration of the Pulman Street playground, singing in local residential homes for the elderly and honouring Hull's lost trawler men through creative art shows an enterprising commitment to the community. The award is very special as every child; from our youngest 3 year olds to our mature year 6 pupils have contributed to achieving this National Standard."
Steven Bayes Portfolio Holder Economic Regeneration & Employment said
“Both schools have been part of The Hull Ready Project sponsored by Hull Training and St Stephens for a number of years now and have enterprise champions amongst their teaching staff. Priory and Paisley were also involved with the recent round of Make £5 Blossom that saw them link with local business partners Claughtons and NPS who were on hand to loan the children £150 and support them with their business ventures. I am pleased to see that even more young people are learning enterprise skills in order that they can become either the entrepreneurs of tomorrow or indeed enterprising employees.”
Twin girls turn £8.50 loan into £340 profit selling bag tags
1st May 2012
NOT many can claim to have set up a successful family business at nine years old. But triumphant twins Amy and Laura Barton would have Alan Sugar purring after turning an £8.50 loan into an enterprise which has so far earned then £340.
The Year 4 pupils have sold 400 bag tags, which now adorn almost every student bag at Victoria Dock Primary School where they attend. The successful enterprise by Laura and Amy is part of The Make £5 Blossom project, set up by Hull Ready, an initiative designed to help tackle youth unemployment and raise aspirations by inspiring enterprise in schools.
The girls attend a ceremony at the Guildhall to celebrate their achievements along with other youngsters across the city. Amy and Laura's classmates also made £432 after organising a school disco where they did everything from selling tickets to DJing. The class was given £150 by the school's Private Finance Initiative (PFI) partner the Sewell Group. Victoria Dock Primary has been involved in The Make £5 Blossom campaign for a few years but Amy and Laura's class was the first to decide to split the £150 up among smaller groups.
Laura said: "We came up with the idea at home.
"We realised that people like things with their name on it."
"It's really cool, seeing all the other children with the tags we've made."
Head teacher Denham Kite praised the girls' achievements.
He said: "We decided to get involved with The Make £5 Blossom project to inspire the children.
"It is a great idea and brings together a lot of different skills.
"It fits in with everything in the curriculum and involves communication, taking risks and perseverance.

Children make their £5 blossom - Round 7
3rd April 2012
Hull’s premier primary enterprise programme sponsored by St Stephen’s Centre and the Co-operative Group “Make £5 Blossom” will be holding its 7th celebration event in April. 11 local Primary Schools will get the opportunity to showcase their business and enterprise skills when they gather for the Make £5 Blossom celebration event at The Guildhall on the 25th of April. Each of the schools involved have linked up with a range of local businesses that have provided support a £150 loan for the children to run their own mini business for the past few months. The range of ideas the children have come with have been fantastic with them having fashion shows, art galleries, scone and bun sales and children even running their own school discos and a French cafés.
Under this scheme, local businesses are being given the chance to invest in the future of young people. The project works through an initial investment of just £150 for a class of 30 pupils to encourage children to develop business plans, launch ideas and create products, all the time the project is running they get to you use an abundance of enterprising skills such as creativity, financial literacy and design and marketing.
Local IT Company Primary Technologies have linked with two schools, Gillshill and Westcott Primary; the company provided the pupils with the financial loan and has supported the children throughout.
Martin Thacker, IT Engineer at Primary Technologies, said
“It has been amazing to see how the children have come up with great ideas and then actually put them into practice, some of the children have been making actual phone calls to local stores and supermarkets to negotiate a better deal for the materials they needed, getting the chance to demonstrate confidence and show these creative skills is great to see. I have enjoyed meeting the children and trying to help them where we could, and it is great to see them enlisting support from local stores like the Co-op and Asda too”.
Steven Bayes Director Co-operative Group said
“The Co-operative family of businesses are pleased to support Hull’s £5 Blossom scheme, so far our the Co-op Bank in Hull, and our James Reckitt Avenue and Preston Road stores have got involved and it has been a wonderful opportunity for our staff. As a movement we are committed to enabling young people to make to be given a wide range of opportunities and this programme certainly does that As the pupils decide what they sell, where they sell it and to whom, before checking the profits and presenting their final results, they also learn the importance of making ethical decisions which is integral to our philosophy as a company.”
Mike Notarantonio, Hull Ready Project Officer said:
“We are trying to create an enterprising culture in Hull and what better way to start than allowing our Primary school children the chance learn new and build on existing skills while they work alongside real businesses. As well as all the enterprise skills used, the children will also use numeracy and literacy for a real reason during this and then get a say on what any profit they make on their project is used for”

Entrepreurship Masterclass - Report
5th December 2012
This is achieved by introducing the young people to local role models, as well as inspiring them through presentations, activities and discussion centred on their own life experiences, vision and achievements. The event began with a welcome by BBC presenter Blair Jacobs who outlined what the event was about and talked about the importance young people play in the future of the city of Hull. As an ice breaker the students had to build a free standing tower out of string, spaghetti and tape and place marshmallow on the top the winning team were given a small prize from Hull Ready.
The first inspiration of the day was provided by the day’s main guest speaker, international business woman and runner up in the BBC Apprentice series Ruth Badger who focused on the importance of having the right attitude in business and in life. During her presentation Ruth praised the city’s young people for their enterprising attitudes, in particular those that she had met whilst judging the Badger’s Sett Enterprise Challenge the night before.
As proof of this, the young people then heard from a variety of young local entrepreneurs including Hull’s Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2009 Amanda Hartley of Amanda’s Blue Orchid, Ethan Gibson Impression 11 who set up business whilst still at College and Phil Benson of Xing Health told how discovering ‘smoothies’ had provided the inspiration to develop their business. All of these young entrepreneurs had received funding for their businesses from the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank.
By the afternoon, it was time to put some of the ideas from the morning’s presentations into practice. They were asked to develop a marketing concept for a random object given to them and to pitch this to the Badger’s Sett. Each group had 45 minutes to come up with the name of the product, the retail cost and suitable marketing material. It was then time to present to panel chair Ruth Badger and her fellow judges
The Badger’s Sett judges were:
Nick Hildyard Joint MD Arco
Sarah Longthorn MD Wedgewelly
Phil Vozza Managing Director NPS Humber
Ruth Badger
Cllr Helene O'Mullane Portfolio Holder Children Services
Richard Duxbury, Deputy Managing Director, Mail News & Media
Six teams were identified to present to the Badger’s Sett, with Ruth and her Badgers
giving each team a real grilling before retiring to make their deliberations. Top of the pile came Olympic Fan Band from Hessle High School who won £500 donated by Arco. Second place, and £250 courtesy of NPS- Humber went to Dynamic Ring – Malet Lambert School whilst behind them came Ear Sport Probe from Andrew Marvell Business Enterprise College who won £150 donated by Hull FC Foundation Fourth and fifth spots went to Mexi wave from Trinity House School and Your Olympic Dream from Newland High School for Girls respectively, with i Blah of St Mary’s College taking sixth place. These three prizes of £100 worth of vouchers were donated by Tigers Trust, Force-7 and the University of Hull.
At the end of the event, all teachers, students and business volunteers were asked to complete an evaluation, the results of which clearly showed that the event had been a success. Teachers in particular felt that the event had significantly developed students’ enterprise capabilities as set out in Hull’s Big 13 Enterprise Skills.
Day 3 Global Entrepreurship Week - Our City, the Mail at the heart of it
16th November 2011
The day was titled ‘Our City – The Mail at the heart of it’. It was facilitated by popular BBC presenter Blair Jacobs and representatives of the Hull Daily Mail. The pupils were treated to a warm welcome from Councillor Colin Inglis, The Right Worshipful the Lord Mayor of Kingston upon Hull and Admiral of the Humber in his chains and robes of office. At the start of the day Jamie Macaskill, Assistant Editor at Mail News and Media set the scene by informing the young people about the role of the local newspaper in the community before a group of students from Hull College played out short scenes written for the day by local playwright Kate Brenan of Act the Facts about how reporters gather news and develop advertising content for the Hull Daily Mail.
During the day pupils attended a press conference relating to a big local news story which was about a visit to Hull by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge or to everyone in the audience Wills and Kate. The pupils got to play the role of journalists by listening and asking questions real life journalists in order to help them write a story for the Hull Daily Mail. Pupils also had to speak to local business owners who would like to advertise in the Hull Daily Mail, as part of this the pupils learnt how to question a business for the right information to create an advert. The pupils than went on to take the news and advertising content they had gathered and had to write a news story or design an advert that would appear in the Hull Daily Mail. After lunch the pupils learnt about how the editorial content gets onto the newspaper page and on the website and how the adverts get onto the newspaper page and on the website. They than went on to learn how we get the newspaper into the shops and delivered to homes, whilst understanding what makes people buy a newspaper.

16th November 2011
This event saw primary school pupils, teachers, business people, educationalists and local councillors all come together to celebrate the second year of the whole Hull Ready programme and hear how successful our young people had been in Making £5 Blossom. In the true spirit of Entrepreneurship Week the tables were then turned on the adults to do a bit of work and they were set a task by pupils from Longhill Primary School to see how each table could work as a team in building a “paper” raft and each one was than floated in a fish tank as the pupils from Longhill added weights to see how secure the raft was and to see how many of the 13 Enterprise skills they could use. The adults clearly demonstrated a number of the required skills and the winners overall were table Eight that had representatives from Hull College, NPS-Humber, Heista Fuels, Hull City council, CEI University of Warwick and Mally Welburn their raft managed to survive with 8 weights added to it before it sank.

KC donate £60,000 to boost Youth Enterprise
30th September 2011
LOCAL communications provider KC will donate £60,000 to Hull’s Youth Enterprise Bank over the next three years to help support young entrepreneurs to realise their business dreams.
The John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank offers practical support and grants of up to £1,000 for young people who need finance to help set up or develop their businesses. Since it was established in 2003 it has helped more than 150 young entrepreneurs in a wide range of business sectors.
The bank is funded through a range of donations from young entrepreneurs together with Hull Training and is closely linked to the Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership, which aims to encourage young people to become more enterprising and contribute to Hull’s target of creating 1,200 new businesses.
The donation from KC means more enterprising young people from Hull and East Yorkshire who are aged from 13 to 21, can receive funding to buy the business equipment and services they need to get started.
Sean Royce, Commercial and Finance Director at KC, said:
“We’re delighted to support an organisation that does such important work in nurturing entrepreneurial spirit amongst the region’s young people.
“Today’s enterprising young people today are tomorrow’s employers and it’s vital for their future success that they get the practical and financial support they need in the early days of their business careers.
“As a local responsible business we have a role to play in supporting the region’s economy and stimulating business growth and this is a way of doing that while also inspiring young people to make their careers in business.”
Amongst the businesses the Youth Enterprise Bank has supported are Hessle florist Amanda’s Blue Orchid and health food and smoothie firm Xing Health.
Maureen Foers OBE, Chair of the Youth Enterprise Bank, said:
“The donation from KC means we can help more of the region’s young people make their business dreams come true and start them on the path to business success.
“The donation also means that for the first time we can offer grants to young people not just in Hull but across the wider East Yorkshire region.”
KC’s donation follows the recent launch of the KC Invest, an investment fund worth up to £600,000 to the local area, which will support start-ups and expanding businesses in the digital and technology sectors across the region.
The Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership recently launched Global Entrepreneurship Week 2011, which takes place from 14-18 November. During the week children and young people across the region will take part in events to stimulate their interest in business, with guest speakers including The Apprentice stars Ruth Badger and Claire Young.
Ruth Badger, Patron of Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership Said:
“I wish to thank KC for agreeing to invest £20,000 a year for the next three years in Hull and East Ridings young people through the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank. There is no doubt that the area has a reputation to be proud of supporting its enterprising young people and this investment shows that KC has bought into that success.”
